Happy Birthday, Gloria Steinem

March 25, 2014 • Culture

Journalist, activist, and all around badass Gloria Steinem turns 79 today. Heavily involved in the women’s lib movement of the late 1960s, Steinem, with the help of others, managed to change the cultural dialogue, giving girls and women a voice where before they had none. Well, cheers to that. In honor of this babe, soak in some of Steinem’s most enlightened quotes:

“A pedestal is as much a prison as any small, confined space.”

“Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”

“Hope is a very unruly emotion.”

“We’ve begun to raise daughters more like sons… but few have the courage to raise our sons more like our daughters.”

“Power can be taken, but not given. The process of the taking is empowerment in itself.”

“Like art, revolutions come from combining what exists into what has never existed before.”
